I spent a few nights in Death Valley at the start of July—maybe not the best time of year to visit, with the temperature still above 100F when I arrived at 2am. It fitted in with a work trip, and I managed a bit of photography around sunset and sunrise. The famous Racetrack Playa was amazing although the 20 mile drive on a bumpy unpaved road is not something I am planning to repeat soon.
